Write From History

This weeks sponsor: Brookdale House- Write from History series

In the Charlotte Mason style – children will learn to write by studying some of the “greats” – collections from famous and talented authors of the past. Who best to learn from – than the Masters themselves?

In this way – you are teaching an elementary student to write, and you’re also teaching history and handwriting  –  you can definitely save time with this homeschool writing curriculum and method of teaching.

It is an elementary program – intended to prepare children for middle school writing.

This writing program teaches grammar, spelling, penmanship, and history—all at once.

Covers of Write from History
A bit more about the Write from History series:
Based on the Charlotte Mason style of learning, students will study writings by famous and talented authors from history. They will then complete age appropriate assignments using oral dictation, writing summaries or additional writing.
In this manner – your history, spelling, reading, grammar and handwriting is combined – saving you time and money on curriculum and with terrific results!
From Brookdale House:

All Level 1 books contain historically relevant reading selections divided into four chapters: short stories, time period tales, poetry, and cultural tales. There are two writing models following each reading selection. One or both can be used for copywork. If the student is ready, the second model can be used for dictation.

In the Level 1 books, the two different writing models are presented differently for each reading selection. For the first model, children write in an area that has ruled lines below each word they copy. The second writing model is written at the top of the net page, and is followed by ruled lines in the lower half of the page. The second model requires students to write from memory.

All Level 2 books contain historically relevant reading selections divided into four chapters: short historical narratives, excerpt from primary source documents, poetry and cultural tales. In the Level 2 books, students in grades 3 to 5 are introduced in a gentle manner to interesting excerpts from primary source documents. These older students are encouraged to copy paragraph sized models written in either print or cursive. In the appendix are additional models which may be used for studied dictation.

Jim Hodges Audio Books Giveaway

This weeks sponsor: Jim Hodges Audio Books Giveaway –  Win 2 Cds of your choice

Jim Hodges Audio Books Makes History Come Alive with Henty books and more…..

When we first began listening to our new audio book, True to the Old Flag, we were captivated as we heard Mr. Hodges change his voice in so many ways.  Whatever character he was reading about, he would become.  Voice inflections, accents and all!  We knew that we would NOT get bored!   He has a way of making the story so interesting & the listener feels as if he or she is right there with the characters of the book.  My son is always asking if we can listen to one more chapter, when it’s time for our listening session to end.

One of my hesitations to picking up a Henty book was because of the “old English”.  Well, Jim Hodges Audio books has helped me out with that one, too!  They have vocabulary guides to go with many of the Henty books that are available on their site. When we don’t know what a word means, we look it up in the vocab guide.  Talk about a time saver!  (Read more of this in depth review at Sidetracked Sarah)

What others are saying . . .

“What do you get when you cross a spellbinding story with an eloquent storyteller? You get Jim Hodges reading aloud a G. A. Henty book! We had to drive 6 hours this weekend and our family was enthralled! Mr. Hodges reads with a fluent style that charmed us all, from Drew (7 years) to Daddy (40 years).”
L. F. – Renton WA, TEACH Magazine

“A highly professional recording. Made history come alive for me and my sons. What a voice!”
D. J. – Fort Worth TX

“Whether you are out on a walk, riding in the car, or just sitting by the fire, you will be able to bring these G. A. Henty classics with you wherever you go. Jim Hodges has brought to life these Henty novels in unabridged, dramatic readings. The tapes are high-quality and well recorded with strong, clear reading – perfect for recapturing that “lost” time in the car.”

Homeschool Survival

$50 Gift Card from Amazon
You’ll be able to purchase supplies your family needs and take advantage of the wonderful “Back to School” sales going on daily!
The team here at Homeschool Survival came up with our own favorite product ideas for homeschool. These are things we use regularly and recommend to others to enhance the homeschool year!

With so many little guys in my house during the homeschooling day busy boxes are a must for me! I love how easy they are for little hands to use and the activities are endless. We use them to create pictures and other art projects. They are great for beginner writers and readers. Print off letters for them to “trace” with dots,  have them match dots to numbers, or play find the letter by printing off a sheet of mixed up letters and only dotting certain ones. ~ Emmalee Hoggatt, The Hoggatt Homeschool

laminator

I absolutely love this laminator. It’s very reasonably priced. We love to laminate play-dough mats and homemade games. Its a great access to our homeschool. ~ Jill Craft, Blessed Beyond a Doubt

My first choice of favorite homeschool product is Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Comstock. It is really all I need for early elementary level science, and I continue to use it all the way through high school. It is a timeless nature study guide, science text, collection of unit studies, and field guide all in one. By far my best homeschooling investment.                  ~ Anne Campbell, Learning Table

I DO SO love a good globe and this one is very affordable! I’ve used everything from wall maps, to blow up globes in our family homeschool. This year we will be enjoying the real deal as we regularly study exciting people, places, and things from around the world!        ~ Kelli Becton, Adventures in Child Rearing

Educating the WholeHearted Child

Any time I need encouragement, as a homeschool mom, this is the book I pull out.  There are so many practical tips and tricks throughout the book that give me the perfect pep talk that I need.  It has everything from home organization ideas to curriculum ideas.  Really, everything a homeschooling mom would need!    — Sarah Robinson, Sidetracked Sarah & Owner of Homeschool Survival.

Words are Categorical Series
We love learning grammar with the books in the Words Are Categorical series. These charming books teach students grades 2-4 with fun titles such as A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink (nouns) and Hairy, Scary, Ordinary (adjectives). There are also books for verbs, adverbs, pronouns, compound words, conjunctions, prepositions, synonyms, and more!              ~ Marcy Crabtree, Ben and Me
Smead Envelope with String-Tie Closure

Smead Envelope with String-Tie Closure, Side Loading, Letter Size, Green Poly, 5 per Pack (89523)

These are my favorite right now because I use them for several things in our homeschool organization. I use them to hold unit studies, all the printable packs I print out and I also use them for workboxes. I have tried multiple things as workboxes and these are my best find. They are durable and the boys can see the contents inside. They are strong enough to hold large high school size books, a folder and spiral notebook. I Velcro the workbox tags to the outside and tape their lesson to the outside. They close up tight and nothing falls out or gets lost!  Works great! ~ Janeen Herlugson, Sprouting Tadpoles

Bible Handwriting and Cursive Sheets: FREE for Homeschool

FREE Bible Handwriting Sheets

Do you use Bible handwriting in your family homeschool?

I find that starting our day with Bible verses is the best way to survive and thrive through our homeschool day. Often, while I read our family devotion and verses, our 3 boys will sit and work on their handwriting with sheets like the ones below. It serves a dual purpose with memory work and teaches both print and cursive.

Samples:

Bible handwriting

Romans 5:8 is one of my favorite verses. Along with the handwriting and cursive sheets, you’ll find a break-down of the Greek words and definitions as we take a deeper look at the words the bible uses in the scriptures. Commended, His love, and For Us are looked at closely in this passage and are used to show that God not only paid for our sins, but that it was indeed He (in the flesh) who died for us.

This verse is one of many which shows that Jesus was not only the Son of God, and not just a prophet, but was Himself – God – come to fulfill the Word, manifest as a man, demonstrating His love to its fullest extent. For us.

I hope they will bless your family and that you consider starting your day off with Jesus – and FREE handwriting sheets!

Using Restaurant Menus for Math Practice

Keep Math Fresh with Menu MathIf you don’t school year round then summer time, down time can sometimes cause a serious case of brain loss. You know, the time when your children forget the entire last year of learning and you have to start all over again! Well, today I am sharing a fun way to keep math in the for front of their minds and also show them why we need it in the first place.

We are doing some fun restaurant pretend play with a hidden agenda.

First, you will need some menus. I asked several of our favorite restaurants for to-go menus or printed some of the internet to use. The important part is that they have prices listed.

Menu Math

Second, you will need this Receipt Printable.

Menu Math Printable Receipt

It is also nice to have play (or real) money so they can practice counting out change. I found some at our local Dollar Store.

Menu Math, Using Play Money

Then let your kids play restaurant and practice filling out the order tickets. Then adding up the totals and counting back change!

Mexican Posole From Scratch: Homeschool Cooking

Mexican Posole from Scratch

My husband, Mark, came up  this wonderful recipe for Mexican Posole from scratch.  It’s a terrific, tasty soup.  My boys love the flavor and I believe you will too! The rich taste of the homemade broth, combined with the hearty meat and crunchy fresh garnish is simply melt in your mouth – delicious!

We use recipes in our family homeschool

Why not use it to add a little spice to your homeschool study of Mexico?

We finish up our geography reading, and then head straight to the kitchen to cook up a dish from our country of study.  We use the time to discuss what we’ve learned and compare the differences from one culture to another.

Mexican Posole

Ingredients

  • Homemade chicken stock
  • Chicken or pork (shred or chunk small)
  • 1 tsp. Cumin
  • 3 cans large white hominy
  • 2 – 3 cloves minced garlic

 Mexican Posole from Scratch

Homemade chicken stock

Cook full chicken, or leftover chicken with bones, onion, garlic powder, and celery if available – bring to a hard boil then turn down the heat and simmer for at least an hour.

Directions

  • Add first 5 ingredients
  • Simmer for an hour (do not hard boil or hominy will come apart)
  • Skim fat off the top
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Serve hot in bowls and add garnish – salt and pepper to taste

Fresh Garnish

  • Cilantro- chopped
  • Jalapeno- deseeded and chopped
  • Green onions- chopped

Whether you are looking for a fun new dinner recipe or looking for ways to make your homeschool a bit more “hands on” by cooking the meals from countries you study – I hope your family will love this dish as much as mine does!

Do you use cooking in your family homeschool? If so, please share ideas in the comments on how you implement cooking into your lessons!

Make your worksheets pop! StartWrite 6 includes easy to use yet robust design tools, so you can control colors and a variety of letter attributes. Add cute Border Art to highlight the word your students are learning. Insert Dotted Shapes so they can practice drawing squares, circles and triangles while they learn to write the words. Add Clip Art, Area Shading, Start Dots, and lots more. The only real problem we see with StartWrite Version 6 is that with all the new options and features you’ll enjoy creating worksheets so much that you’ll forget you’re supposed to be making them for the kids!

Summer Pretend Play – Ice Cream Shop!

20140520_153645

School is out and it is beginning to heat up for summer in my neck of the woods! Although we don’t have “school” in the summer months I do plan activities to keep little hands busy and big minds active.

Today we did a fun pretend play activity with “Cloud Dough” (see recipe below). Cloud dough is soft and fluffy and will hold together when packed tightly or fall apart when crumbled. It is a very cheap, fun and entertaining sensory material.

We played Ice Cream Shop!

I gathered some simple supplies that I had on hand and our cloud dough.

20140520_154819

Then we headed outside!!! They set up shop in the shade under their club house and waited for their first pretend customer…Me!

20140520_155723

I had them color a price list and I paid in play money. The olders then had to count back change while the littles worked on fine motor skills of scooping the cones.

20140520_155735

Then we switched for the next customer!

20140520_155838

You could easily use real ice cream but cloud dough won’t melt! However, keep a watchful eye and provide gentle reminders that it is just for pretend!

CLOUD DOUGH RECIPE

8 cups all purpose flour

1 cup baby oil

Washable paint

Mix flour and baby oil in large bowl. Streak through washable paint and mix well. The paint will look like sprinkles mixed into the flour.
